Ladies at Berkeley Castle Ladies at Berkeley Castle Ladies at Berkeley Castle Ladies at Berkeley Castle

Our ladies visited Berkeley Castle during the special ‘Behind Closed Doors’ exhibition. They saw King Edward II’s cell and for the first time ever the Family Chapel. The ladies reported it was well worth the visit to see things they may have missed on previous visits including a weird tucked away toilet! There was also the opportunity to walk around the gardens in lovely weather for the time of year and enjoy an ‘al fresco’ lunch.

Gigg Mill Visit Weaving Loom Spinning Demonstration Having a Go at Weaving
We had a very special visit to Gigg Mill in Nailsworth. We were shown various weaving looms used throughout the ages and even had a go. We were also treated to a demonstration of spinning. Who knew that fabric for tennis balls, baize for snooker tables and fabric for the King’s Guards uniforms would have all originated in the Stroud mills; and the late Duke of Edinburgh’s wedding suit was woven in the area. Thank you to our hosts Jane, Ann and Pete for such an interesting and informative visit.

Group Competition Entry Winning First Prize and Cup
What a fun evening we had at this year’s group meeting hosted by Kemble & Ewen WI and the cup came home to Tetbury! Thank you to all our ladies who baked a cake or made a patriotic posy – you all helped us to get points which contributed to us coming first this year. Also thanks to everyone who helped to make the group competition entry which came first.

Some of our WI ladies agreed to be models for the Sustainable Fashion Show at The Goods Shed in early June. One of our Resolutions this year was to reduce clothes waste, so the show, organised by Greening Tetbury and Tetbury WI jointly, addressed the concerns of both parties. Despite being out of their comfort zone, our ladies put on a spectacular performance which was enjoyed by a huge enthusiastic audience. Our models were also supported behind the scenes by a number of WI members who helped with all the clothes changes and getting everyone in the right place at the right time! Well done ladies.

Bill Shephard
Our May speaker was Bill Shephard who had worked in various roles in the TV and film industry, including floor manager for Granada Television and on various films including those starring a young Daniel Craig – Moll Flanders and a young Keira Knightley – The Hole. Bill explained how his role including travelling the world and the various logistical problems of getting everything required for filming in the right place at the right time. Bill gave us a fascinating insight into the film and TV industry.

WI Tree WI Tree
Lorna kindly went to check and photograph two of the tress donated by Tetbury WI. The tree on the left is the Wedding Cake tree, planted by the then Duchess of Cornwall, to mark the wedding of HRH Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton on 29th April 2011. The tree on the right was planted in remembrance of the late Queen Elizabeth II in October 2022. Both trees appear to be doing well!
